Pune: Metro Work Damages Cable, Over 3,000 Hinjawadi Residents Face Long Power Outages
Pune, April 7, 2026: More than 3,000 residents of Yashwin Society in Hinjawadi have been severely affected by prolonged power outages after an underground cable was damaged during ongoing metro construction work.
Residents reported that electricity supply has been disrupted for 8 to 10 hours at a stretch, with power unavailable since 12 PM the previous day. The outages have brought daily life to a halt, particularly impacting children, senior citizens, and working professionals dependent on uninterrupted power for online classes and work-from-home arrangements.
The situation has led to growing frustration among residents, who have raised concerns over repeated disruptions and alleged lack of timely response from the authorities, including Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited.
The prolonged outages have affected essential household activities, digital learning, and professional commitments across the large residential complex. Residents say the frequency and duration of power cuts have made normal living increasingly difficult.

Officials from MSEDCL Hinjawadi, when contacted, stated that the disruption was caused due to damage to underground cables during metro work near Dollar Metro Station. They added that the fault occurred beneath a concrete road, making it difficult to trace and repair quickly, leading to delays in restoring power supply.
A PITCMRL spokesperson said, ‘All utility cables along the Hinjewadi stretch were relocated well before excavation, and work at the concerned location had been completed 4–5 days prior to the reported fault. No metro-related excavation debris was present at the fault point. The concrete material seen in the vicinity pertains to pre-existing debris from earlier works. Our work has no linkage to the reported power outage. We continue to exercise due caution around existing utilities and are extending full support to the concerned authorities.”
