Pune, April 6, 2026: Days after the death of 19-year-old Ariz Shaikh in a water tanker accident on NIBM Road, residents of Mohammadwadi and NIBM Annexe have raised serious concerns over road safety, calling SM Ghule Circle a high-risk zone and demanding immediate corrective measures.

A formal complaint has been submitted to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pune City Police by resident Jaymala Dhankikar, urging urgent intervention to prevent further accidents in the area. Shaikh lost his life on April 5 after a speeding tanker hit his two-wheeler near the Cloud 9 – Anandvan stretch, close to the junction.

Residents have pointed to multiple issues, including unsafe road design, high-speed movement of heavy vehicles, and lack of traffic control measures. According to the complaint, the circle has poor visibility, unregulated merging points, and no proper lane discipline, making it hazardous for both motorists and pedestrians.

Locals say the situation is worsened by the frequent movement of water tankers, as the area relies heavily on tanker supply. Many of these vehicles reportedly make several trips daily, often at high speeds.

Raj Singh, a resident, described the stretch as extremely dangerous, noting that risky turns and speeding tankers are a daily concern. Minoo Irani highlighted the absence of regulation, calling for measures such as GPS tracking, speed governors, and restrictions during peak hours.

Sandhya Gokhale also pointed out the lack of basic safety features like speed breakers, signage, and traffic personnel.

Residents have demanded a redesign of the circle as per standard road safety norms, installation of traffic calming measures, and stricter monitoring of tanker movement. They have also called for regular deployment of traffic police, installation of speed cameras, and a detailed safety audit of the entire stretch.

The complaint stresses that repeated accidents in the same area indicate a larger systemic issue and warns that without immediate action, more lives could be at risk.
