Pune, April 6, 2026: A 19-year-old youth lost his life after a speeding water tanker rammed into his two-wheeler in the Mohammadwadi–NIBM Annexe area on Sunday evening, intensifying concerns over the unchecked movement of heavy vehicles in rapidly growing residential zones.

The victim, Ariz Shaikh, sustained critical injuries and was declared dead upon arrival at a nearby hospital. Police have detained the tanker driver and initiated legal proceedings.

The incident has triggered strong reactions from residents across Mohammadwadi and Undri. Shadab Umar, a resident of Elina Living, termed the incident deeply unfortunate and said authorities must ensure immediate insurance compensation and financial support for the victim’s family.

Echoing concerns over fairness, Mirza Ismail Baig, a resident of Lodha, urged the police to conduct an impartial investigation without any external influence. Zeeshan Inamdar demanded strict legal action, stating that a strong criminal case against the driver would act as a deterrent.

Residents also highlighted the broader issue of accountability. Nisar Khan, an architect and Lodha resident, said responsibility should extend beyond the driver to include tanker owners.

With the area heavily dependent on water tankers amid rapid urbanisation, locals say the increasing movement of heavy vehicles on narrow roads is putting lives at risk. Kizher Shaikh, a resident of Mohammadwadi, called for a comprehensive audit of tanker and dumper drivers, including license verification and mandatory training.

Residents have also demanded strict action against illegal tanker operations and called for health and safety audits covering PUC certificates, insurance, hygiene, and maintenance. They have urged the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Pune Traffic Police, and the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to carry out regular and random inspections.

Sadik Khan, Founder and Chairman of Mohammadwadi Welfare Group, said the incident should serve as a wake-up call for authorities to enforce stricter regulations and prevent further loss of life.

Locals allege that despite repeated complaints, enforcement has remained inadequate, allowing safety risks to persist.
