Pune: MPCB Issues Notice To Chakan Municipal Council Over Air Pollution Violations

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has issued a notice to the Chakan Municipal Council, citing garbage burning and resulting air pollution, following a series of complaints and a site inspection. The council has been given 15 days to respond.

On July 11, in response to numerous complaints from residents and industrialists about the dumping and burning of municipal solid waste in Kharabwadi village, Khed tehsil, the MPCB took action. The site, unauthorized for waste disposal, has been a source of significant air pollution.

On July 8, a site inspection by the sub-regional officer for zone 2 revealed violations, including the unscientific dumping of mixed waste in abandoned stone quarries. The lack of a proper waste processing and segregation plant has exacerbated the problem. Consequently, the MPCB directed the municipal council to explain why they should not face legal action and be subjected to maximum environmental compensation as mandated by the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

The council is required to submit a corrective action plan, detailing short-term and long-term measures to address the issue. Failure to comply within the stipulated 15 days will result in the MPCB initiating legal proceedings without further notice.

“It is essential for municipal councils to ensure proper solid waste management facilities, adhering to guidelines from the Ministry of Urban Development and pollution control boards,” said Ravindra Andhale, regional officer of MPCB. The council’s failure to comply with the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1981 has led to the current situation. Further action will be determined based on the council’s response.
