In response to a recent fatal accident in Kalyani Nagar, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has intensified its crackdown on unauthorized establishments across the city. Continuing its efforts, PMC has demolished an illegal rooftop hotel in Mohammadwadi.

The incident in Kalyani Nagar, where two youths lost their lives, has galvanized city authorities into action. As part of a broader campaign targeting unauthorized pubs, hotels, and restaurants, the construction department has conducted similar operations in Mundhwa, Ghorpadi, Koregaon Park, Viman Nagar, and Kalyani Nagar. Recent actions have also extended to Baner, Kothrud, and Hadapsar.

Specifically, PMC recently dismantled the unauthorized BBC Rooftop construction in Mohammadwadi. Following the Kalyani Nagar incident, the municipal and police administrations have been working closely to clamp down on illegal constructions. So far, the PMC has filed complaints against eight hotels for unauthorized constructions. Prior to the demolition of the Mohammadwadi rooftop hotel, a notice was issued under Section 53 of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act (MRTP), 1966.

The demolition operation in Mohammadwadi involved removing a total of 4,000 square feet of hotel construction and an additional 7,600 square feet of unauthorized shed construction. The PMC deployed significant resources for the task, including two breakers, two cranes, three cutters, eight breakers, and numerous police personnel. Key PMC officials overseeing the operation included Superintending Engineer Shridhar Yevlekar, Executive Engineer Pravin Shende, Deputy Engineer Hanuman Khalate, Branch Engineer Sandeep Dhotre, and Sagar Sakpal, along with Rituja Chilkewar.

The unauthorized construction of the hotel had been inspected twice before the final action was taken. Following the demolition, legal proceedings under Section 52 of the MRTP Act are ongoing.

In addition to Mohammadwadi, the PMC has taken action against 54 unauthorized hotels, pubs, and restaurants in other areas such as Mundhwa, Koregaon Park, Ghorpadi, Pune Station, Kalyani Nagar, and Viman Nagar. The campaign against illegal rooftop hotels, pubs, and bars will continue across all parts of Pune.

The rapid expansion of Pune, particularly with the growth of the IT sector, has led to a boom in the hotel business. Many establishments have taken advantage of tall buildings to implement the illegal and potentially hazardous concept of rooftop hotels. The PMC is committed to addressing these illegal constructions to ensure public safety and compliance with regulations.
