The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to install at least 550 static iron tanks for Ganesh idol immersion at around 300 locations across the city. This decision comes as the civic body has decided to discontinue mobile immersion tanks for 2024. PMC officials announced that water tanks are being constructed at 22 main ghats where residents traditionally immerse their idols. The new static iron tanks aim to reduce environmental pollution caused by the immersion of plaster of Paris idols into the rivers.

Sandeep Kadam, head of PMC’s solid waste management department, confirmed that For 2024 no tenders were issued for mobile immersion tanks. Residents can use the static iron tanks, and we are making adequate arrangement for idol immersion at all ghats in the city

In 2023, PMC had issued a ₹1.5 crore tender for mobile immersion tanks. However, only 59,126 out of 561,428 Ganesh idols were immersed using these mobile facilities, indicating a significant drop in their usage.

The shift to static tanks is expected to streamline the immersion process and better manage the environmental impact, providing a more sustainable option for the festival.
