Pune: Several initiatives are being planned to curb the issue of traffic congestion in Pune. The construction of a bridge in Chandni Chowk has provided some respite. Additionally, two additional flyovers are now being constructed in the city to resolve the traffic issues.

As per the information provided, one of these flyovers will be built between Suncity and Karve Nagar, while the 49-year-old Sadhu Vaswani Bridge will be replaced with a new flyover.

The Public Works Department (PWD) will oversee the construction of this new bridge. The flyover between Sun City and Karve Nagar was sanctioned to ease traffic congestion on Sinhagad Road, Karve Nagar and Kothrud areas.

As per the information received, the project was delayed due to the contractor’s bankruptcy. The work has now been awarded to a new contractor, Vijay Sudam Patel, at a low bid of 12 per cent. The Pune Municipal Corporation’s standing committee has approved the project, and it will now be executed for Rs 37.04 crore.

The Public Works Department will demolish the 49-year-old Sadhu Vaswani Bridge and construct a new bridge in its place. A consultant appointed by the Pune Municipal Corporation has recommended the construction of a new bridge to connect the Camp and Koregaon Park Section.

SMC Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd. Ltd. has been awarded the tender for the lowest bid of Rs 58,11,336. Once the bridge construction commences, traffic will be diverted from the Pune station area.

According to sources, the bridge’s construction will take 24 months, excluding the monsoon period, and traffic will be rerouted through alternate routes. In the meantime, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) will construct a new bridge over the Mula River between Bopodi and Aundh, connecting Pune with Pimpri-Chinchwad city.

The bridge’s construction is expected to cost Rs 36.25 crore, with the Pune Municipal Corporation bearing half the cost (Rs 18.13 crore).
