Pimpri – In a concerted effort to combat pollution in the city, the Municipal Corporation has undertaken various activities, including the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) to reduce vehicular emissions. To this end, the Municipal Corporation has planned to lease 79 electric vehicles, with 22 EVs already in operation. Today, seven Tata Nexon electric vehicles were introduced into the Municipal Corporation’s mechanical department during an inauguration ceremony held at the main building in Pimpri. The event was graced by the presence of Commissioner Shekhar Singh and other officials, including Additional Commissioner Ulhas Jagtap, Health Medical Officer Dr. Laxman Gofane, and Deputy Commissioner Ravikiran Ghodke.

Under a lease agreement lasting five years, the Municipal Corporation is acquiring a total of 79 electric vehicles, which can be adjusted in number based on future requirements. The fleet comprises 25 Tata Nexons and 54 Tata Tigor electric vehicles. As per the Municipal Corporation’s policy, a total of 95 vehicles have been approved for officers and officials, and the emphasis is now on reducing the number of petrol and diesel vehicles in favor of electric ones. The Tata Nexon electric vehicles have a range of 312 kilometers on a single charge, while the Tata Tigor vehicles cover a distance of 170 kilometers with one charge.

All the newly introduced Tata Nexon vehicles are equipped with modern systems and GPS trackers. Additionally, the maintenance and repair costs for these electric vehicles are significantly lower than those for petrol and diesel vehicles, resulting in savings for the Municipal Corporation, according to Babasaheb Galbale, Associate City Engineer.

This transition to electric vehicles marks a positive step towards reducing pollution and promoting sustainable transportation in the city. The Municipal Corporation’s initiative is expected to contribute to cleaner air and a greener environment for the residents of Pimpri.
