In response to the rising cases of the Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) linked to contaminated water, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to install gas chlorinators at four severely affected locations. The move aims to curb the spread of the syndrome by ensuring an uninterrupted supply of clean drinking water.

The affected areas, including Barangani Mala, Khadakwasla Jackwell, and surrounding localities, receive untreated water directly from the Khadakwasla dam. To tackle this issue, PMC has sanctioned the installation of gas chlorination units at key water supply points.

According to PMC Additional Commissioner Prithviraj BP, four gas chlorinators will be installed at a cost of ₹200 crore. Additionally, a 200-metre water pipeline will be laid in Dhayari and Narhe to ensure a direct supply of treated water.

The civic body has also initiated a crackdown on unauthorized reverse osmosis (RO) water suppliers, taking action against 60 illegal operators so far. Stricter guidelines have been imposed to regulate the sector.

Residents from affected areas have welcomed the decision, emphasizing the urgency of clean water supply. “We hope the installations happen swiftly as access to clean drinking water is essential for our health and safety,” said a local resident.
