The atmosphere at Shivneri Fort, on the occasion of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s birth anniversary, brimmed with excitement. However, festivities took a dire turn as a swarm of bees attacked tourists just before the Shiv Jayanti festival. The incident left 70 tourists stung, with four sustaining serious injuries and requiring hospitalization.

Reports indicate that the chaos ensued after some youths threw stones at a beehive upon spotting tourists in the Shivneri Fort area. This triggered the bees into a frenzied attack, catching the unsuspecting tourists off guard. Amidst the panic, some tourists were injured as they fell down stairs while attempting to flee.

The affected tourists, who had come to explore the nearby Tulja Caves, included women and families from the Pune-Mumbai region. They were promptly rushed to Junnar Rural Hospital for medical attention.

Injured survivors recounted the harrowing experience, attributing the bee attack to the stone pelting by unidentified individuals. The incident has raised questions about the oversight of the archaeology department in ensuring visitor safety at the historic site.
