Pune: Several street hawkers and vendors still keep encroaching space on MG Road despite continuous anti-encroachment drives.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Abdul Rahman, Shopkeeper on MG Road said, “Street vendors like fruit sellers and others install their hand karts near my shop, encroaching the space. Though there is not much nuisance, still my shop couldn’t be seen easily as it is very small in height. Besides, they have a fixed hafta with the police, so even they neglect the issue.”

Wahid Shaikh, shopkeeper on MG Road said, “I do not have any issue with the hawkers. However,  as soon as the authorities conduct an anti-encroachment drive, the hawkers will soon start reinstalling their shops.”

An MG Road shopkeeper, requesting anonymity said, “I have a stationery shop on MG Road. Although I do not face any issues, the hawkers can be seen with their carts at the beginning of MG Road.”

RT Shaikh, Chief Health Superintendent, Pune Cantonment Board said, “We are conducting drives every day to keep a check on the hawkers. During the drive, we warn the hawkers as well as ask them to leave the area immediately. We are planning to increase the frequency of our drives as well.”
