To keep a close & stricter eye on the Yerawada jail inmates, the Yerawada Central Jail has installed more than 800 cameras, was officially opened on Friday. According to officials, Yerawada and six other prisons in Maharashtra now have operational CCTV networks with a combined 2400 cameras.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Sunil Dhamal, Superintendent, Yerawada Central Jail, said “812 new CCTV cameras have been installed inside the Yerawada Jail on 3rd February 2024.”

As per further information, Radhika Rastogi, the principal secretary of the home department, officially inaugurated the CCTV network at Yerawada Central Prison on Friday. Rastogi emphasized the significance of preserving prisoners’ human rights while discussing the various current initiatives in place to improve prison facilities, such as smart card-based services, online interviews, better living conditions, skill development, and educational initiatives.

The impending opening of a cashless canteen facility that will enable prisoners to make payments online was mentioned by Amitabh Gupta, Director General of Police and Inspector General of Prisons and Correctional Services. According to officials, this action should simplify financial transactions within the prison system.

According to officials, in order to improve monitoring of all correctional facilities, plans are underway to integrate the CCTV control rooms of prisons with central headquarters.
