Pune- The Building Development Department of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) took strict action on unauthorized constructions situated on FC Road today. Under this initiative, action was also taken on an unlicensed shopping mall at Shirole Plot. A two-storey mall was constructed with the help of iron angles, girders, and tin shields without acquiring a license for the same.

There were around 70 small and big stalls located inside the mall. As the court had issued a stay order, no action could be taken so far. However, the administration appointed a senior lawyer and the eight-year-old stay order was finally lifted by the High Court. Therefore, measures to take down the illegal structure were taken immediately. The PMC officials and the civic administration had first sent a notice to the plot owner in 2016 but the latter had taken a legal route.
On December 4, 2023, the PMC demolished around 7,000 square feet of illegal construction. However, the operation was halted as the High Court had issued a stay order later in May. Since the stay order has now been lifted, the administration promptly took action and about 5000 square feet of construction was demolished today. Due to this makeshift shopping mall, people were facing traffic congestion on FC Road. The mall had huge numbers of customers coming in and many cloth sellers were also present inside it. This increased the chances of a fire breaking out causing many casualties. Therefore, a fire engine was kept on standby and immediate demolition measures were taken using a JCB, gas cutter, breakers, and poles.
Inspector Swapnali Shinde and other staff from Shivaji Nagar Police Station were also present. The operation was completed by Deputy Engineer Sunil Kadam and Branch Engineer Rahul Rasale under the guidance of Superintending Engineer Rajesh Bankar and Executive Engineer Bipin Shinde.
Similarly, action was taken against a rough unpaved unauthorized letter shed coming under Construction Department Zone 4 in Wadgaon Sheri. The shed was located near a building occupying an approximate area of 1500 square feet. In Kalwad Wasti of Lohegaon, an encroachment and unauthorized religious shed occupying an area of about 9500 square feet was taken down. The religious structure was located right above a drain. Measures were taken on a total of 11,000 square feet of unauthorized paper sheds as well as raw concrete construction.
