The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has ramped up efforts to curb open garbage dumping across the city, penalizing over 1,200 individuals this month alone. With the monsoon exacerbating waste-related issues, PMC’s solid waste management department has taken stringent measures to address citizen complaints of trash accumulation during rain.

“We are prioritizing the swift removal of waste from streets and open areas,” stated a PMC official, highlighting ongoing efforts to monitor vulnerable spots closely. The enforcement squads have also issued 240 fines to residents who failed to segregate their garbage for collection.

“We have instructed ward offices to heighten vigilance,” the official continued, highlighting the city-wide crackdown on indiscriminate waste disposal. Fines are aimed at dissuading people from littering openly, with PMC urging citizens to utilize installed garbage bins.

In addition to penalties for waste dumping, PMC reported fines issued for other public nuisances, including 49 cases of public spitting and 250 instances of public urination since July 1.

Two cases were also registered for open waste burning. PMC’s solid waste management teams are actively inspecting housing societies to ensure compliance with bulk waste processing guidelines. Notably, eight establishments faced fines recently for non-functional waste processing units.

The civic administration remains committed to maintaining cleanliness and hygiene standards across Pune, emphasizing collaborative efforts between citizens and municipal authorities to tackle waste management challenges effectively.
