Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has written a letter to Bhugaon Gram Panchayat requesting them to stop dumping untreated household and sewage water into the Ramnadi River in an effort to reduce pollution and stop further degradation.

Additionally, the Gram Panchayat has been asked by the civic authority to take preventative measures and provide a report on the issue.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Kedar Vaze, Assistant Municipal Commissioner, PMC Kothrud-Bavdhan Ward Office said, “We sent the letter to Bhugaon Gram Panchayat to stop discharging drainage/sewage water on November 22. As of now, there is no response from the Gram Panchayat regarding measures from their side to stop discharging sewage water into Ramnadi. Also, there is no STP or any other way to treat sewage water. But it is their problem, hence they must find appropriate solutions soon & inform the PMC.”

As per further information, untreated sewage water is being released in Ramnadi, close to the Cocorico Hotel in Bavdhan. Two primary sewage pipes owned by the Pune Zilla Parishad and the Bhugaon Gram Panchayat are where the water is discharged. But to treat this sewage water, the Gram Panchayat needs land for a sewage treatment plant (STP), which has not yet been established.

On October 23, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) recommended Pune Zilla Parishad and Bhugaon Gram Panchayat to take precautionary measures regarding the matter. But even after a month, the Pune Gram Panchayat hasn’t done anything to stop pollution in the river.

Adv Krunal Gharre, a resident of Bavdhan said, “A positive step has been taken by the PMC regarding this sewage water issue. The PMC has at least accepted that sewage water is getting discharged here. Our point is that every local body, PMC, Nagar Palika, Gram Panchayat etc, must ensure that no drainage, sewage or contaminated water enters their jurisdiction or that the area doesn’t discharge contaminated water to any other area. This is the whole idea behind the ‘Mazi Nadi, Mazi Jababdari’ plan as well.”
