Pune, July 6, 2025: A major power outage has crippled Pune’s Hinjawadi IT hub and surrounding MIDC industrial zones, plunging the region into darkness for over nine hours. The blackout, caused by a critical grid failure in a MahaTransco power line, disrupted businesses, residential complexes, and key industrial operations since Sunday afternoon.

According to officials, MahaTransco had carried out a scheduled power shutdown from 11 AM to 1 PM on Sunday for planned maintenance and repairs, which was duly notified through newspapers. However, while restoring the supply post-maintenance, a significant fault was reported in the underground transmission line between Infosys and Pegasus, disrupting power to key areas.

What Triggered the Hinjawadi Blackout?

The crisis unfolded during scheduled maintenance work on the 220 kV Infosys to 220 kV Pegasus underground line conducted by Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited (MahaTransco). Although the work was completed by 1 PM, a sudden technical failure occurred at 2:10 PM while restoring power. This led to electricity being cut off for 91 high-voltage and nearly 12,000 low-voltage consumers in the area.

Key Areas Affected:

  • Hinjawadi Phase 1, 2, and 3 IT Parks
  • MIDC industrial zones
  • Raisoni Park (partially affected)
  • Dohler Company, Wipro Circle
  • Major corporate campuses including Infosys and Nextra

The outage has sparked concerns about operational losses for IT firms and manufacturing units dependent on uninterrupted power supply.

Emergency Efforts to Restore Supply

The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) is working round the clock to restore power through alternative arrangements. Around 63 MW of load has been diverted to other lines to minimize downtime.

“Our teams are working on war footing. We request citizens and industries to cooperate as we work to restore normalcy,” said an MSEDCL Officer to Pune Pulse

Residents Face Backup Power Crisis

Several housing societies in Hinjawadi reported that their diesel generator backups were running out after prolonged use. Residents voiced their frustration over the extended disruption and questioned if preventive measures were in place to avoid such failures.

Authorities have urged residents and commercial establishments to cooperate as teams continue efforts to stabilize the supply.
