Passengers at Pune railway station will soon get improved accessibility as two new lifts on platforms 1 and 6 are ready for operation. These lifts are part of a project to install four lifts at the station to ease passenger movement.

According to the Hindustan Times, last year, the Railway Board sanctioned funds for the installation of four lifts at the station. The project began after a survey conducted in 2022 by Pune railway division officials, who then sent a detailed proposal to railway headquarters.

As per the railway plan, the lifts were to be installed in phases. The first two were planned for platform number 1 and platform number 6 near the Pune Metro station. The other two lifts will be installed between platform numbers 2 and 3, and 4 and 5.

A senior railway official, on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the work on the first two lifts has been completed. “The lifts at platform numbers 1 and 6 will soon start operating for passengers.

Work on the other two lifts is also in progress and will be completed by the end of this year,” the official said.

The station has multiple foot-overbridges (FOBs) to connect platforms. A central FOB, which has been closed since cracks were found, was the widest and connected all six platforms.

Another FOB built in 2015 connects platform numbers 1, 2, and 3. Two older FOBs are located towards the Mumbai end of the station, with one exiting towards Raja Bahadur Road.

Once all four lifts are operational, passengers, especially senior citizens and those with luggage will find it easier to navigate the busy railway station.
