In a petition started by citizens of Pune, addressing the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Residents of India have petitioned authorities to revert pub and restaurant closing times to 11:30 PM, citing the need to restore peace in residential areas. The extension granted during the pandemic for financial support is now deemed unnecessary, with concerns raised over disturbances to community decorum.

The petition also calls for stricter law enforcement measures to address nightlife nuisances. Additionally, residents urge the cancellation of licences for illegally operating restro bars in residential zones lacking essential amenities such as parking, soundproofing and rooftop facilities.

A recent tragic incident has sent shockwaves through our community as two innocent lives were lost in a devastating collision. The incident involved a 17-year-old boy driving an unregistered Porsche at a staggering speed of 150 kmph, resulting in a fatal collision with a two-wheeler. As the community mourns the loss of the victims, calls for justice resonate strongly. This tragic event also underscores the pressing need for tighter regulations on nightlife activities within our city.

In light of the recent events, extending the operating hours of pubs and restaurants beyond 11:30 PM raises serious concerns regarding public safety and heightens the likelihood of accidents and incidents similar to the tragic event. The safety and welfare of citizens must be given utmost priority above all other considerations.

Residents are calling for enhanced law enforcement measures to ensure public safety amidst concerns over extended operating hours for pubs and restaurants. The proposed measures include:

·        Timely Validations of Closure Timings: Law enforcement officials would conduct regular checks to ensure that establishments adhere strictly to mandated closure timings.

·        Crackdown on Underage Drinking and Driving: Rigorous checks would be implemented to prevent underage individuals from consuming alcohol and driving under the influence, reducing the risk of accidents and fatalities.

·        Monitoring Unregistered Vehicles: Increased surveillance efforts would target owners of unregistered vehicles and those without proper number plates, often involved in reckless driving incidents and noise disturbances.

·        Noise Control Measures: Enforcement of noise regulations would address disturbances caused by loud music from pubs and excessive vehicle noise, ensuring a peaceful environment for residents.

·        Enhanced Patrolling: Police presence would be bolstered in areas with high nightlife activity to deter criminal behaviour and respond promptly to emergencies or violations.

·        Citizen Obedience Campaigns: Public awareness campaigns would promote responsible behaviour, emphasising adherence to traffic laws, avoidance of drunk driving and respect for noise ordinances.

Residents emphasise that these measures, alongside the rollback of pub and restaurant closing times, are crucial for mitigating risks associated with late-night activities and creating a safer environment for the community. Authorities are urged to consider these demands seriously and take immediate action to prioritise public safety.
