Pune : Aaditya Thackeray, a leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT) and a former state environment minister, stated on Sunday that the city’s riverfront development project will be detrimental to the local ecology.

The Mula and Mutha rivers should be kept clean, according to Aaditya Thackeray, but this project will cause problems. They must inquire as to whether the project is designated for the contractors. This project involves destroying the riverfront to a great extent.

He was in Pune for a programme where expressed his displeasure about a lot of projects which are pending for public use. Thackeray claims that because important projects like the Lohegaon airport and the extension of the Metro rail project have not been officially opened, the public is unable to use them. According to him, the way drug cartels are coming to light in the state has made people wonder if state governments even still exist.

Speaking about the riverfront development project on Sunday, Thackeray said that an investigation into the project had been ordered when the MVA government was in charge. However, since the new government took office, the investigation has come to a dead end.

According to Thackeray, there should be an investigation into any potential pressure on the civic body to expedite the project’s completion, as the consultant for the riverfront project is from Gujarat. As part of the project, debris is being disposed of close to the river.

According to Thackeray, a citizen rally will be arranged to draw attention to this problem. In the city, a Janata Adalat, or people’s court, will be established. Once dubbed the most liveable city, Pune is suffering from problems like poorly maintained rivers and road excavation. In the absence of corporators, citizens have nowhere to turn to voice these concerns.

Aaditya added that there is still work to be done on public projects like the new terminal at Lohegaon airport and the metro rail stretch that will connect Ruby Hall Clinic to Ramwadi. Similar to the Gokhale Bridge in Mumbai, the Santacruz flyover has also not been started because a VIP has not been invited to inaugurate it. Such delays are hurting the locals.

According to Thackeray, the absence of elected members in civic bodies has effectively put an end to democracy in the state government. The BJP is preoccupied with dividing families and parties; it has no interest in democracy.
