According to officials, 1.08 lakh vehicles—both private and public—need to be reregistered at the regional transport office (RTO) in Pune.

Since most of these car owners have neglected to re-register their vehicles even after the one-year period has passed, RTO officials have announced that an identification campaign to find the violators has been launched in an effort to remind them of their obligation.

A senior Pune RTO official said that as per current regulations, a vehicle must be re-registered once its age reaches 15 years. There is a grace period of one year, after which it becomes mandatory to either re-register or scrap. Most car owners, nevertheless, do not adhere to these standards. As a result, they are now reminding them through different channels.

Vehicle owners are given time, according to an RTO official, to pay the necessary motor vehicle taxes if they wish to renew their registration. If they choose not to, they must still check for and pay any unpaid taxes, fines, and other fees before applying to have the car scrapped. People are now required to send their own reminders because they are not adhering to these procedures.

The official added that the RTO must revoke vehicle registrations following scrapping. It is also advised against driving a car whose registration has expired as this can result in a number of issues. The renewal cost for two-wheelers is Rs 1,650, tax excluded. For four-wheelers, the same amount is Rs 5,000. Owners of vehicles must be aware that after a full year has passed since a vehicle’s registration expires, a late fee of Rs 300 per month is added. In addition, there may be severe penalties if discovered, and things may get much worse if the car is in an accident.
