Pune, April 27, 2026:

A serious and suspicious incident has been reported near the Mula-Mutha riverbank in the Kalyani Nagar–Koregaon Park area, where alleged bone fragments were found amid burning waste on Saturday evening.

Social activist Sachin Bhosale, Chairperson of Pune Panther Sena, has raised concerns over the incident, drawing attention to what he described as a potentially alarming situation. According to him, at around 4:17 pm on April 26, dense and toxic smoke was seen emanating from a secluded stretch near the Westin area in Koregaon Park, clearly visible from a nearby bridge.

Upon inspection, mixed waste was allegedly being burned at the site. The materials reportedly included suspected bone fragments, glass bottles and shards, discarded clothes, plastic, and other hazardous items.

Bhosale highlighted that burning waste containing bones at an isolated location raises serious concerns and could indicate possible illegal activities. He also noted that similar smoke had been observed at the same spot earlier, suggesting a recurring pattern.

The incident has also sparked questions about the effectiveness of civic efforts, especially in light of the recent ‘River Festival’ organised by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on April 22. During the event, senior officials, including the Municipal Commissioner and Mayor, had assured regular river-cleaning drives and emphasized their commitment to river conservation.

However, the recurrence of such incidents has raised doubts about monitoring and enforcement on the ground.

Key Concerns Raised:

* Burning of suspicious waste, including bones, in a secluded area

* Health and environmental hazards due to toxic smoke

* Possibility of illegal dumping and destruction of evidence

* Lack of surveillance despite assurances of river cleanliness

Demands Made:

* Immediate inspection and thorough investigation

* Forensic examination of the suspected bones

* Installation of CCTV cameras and enhanced surveillance along the riverbank

* Immediate halt to waste burning activities

* Strict action against those responsible

Bhosale emphasized that the issue goes beyond waste management, calling it a matter of public safety and environmental risk. He urged the authorities to take swift and serious action.
