The Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Department has announced the installation of an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) on three Highways in Maharashtra.

With the aim to ensure the safety of the commuters, the highway will be built over 775 kilometres as the department is concerned about the increasing fatalities and accidents on Highways between Pune and its neighbouring districts. The areas where Highways are being built are where most of the accidents take place.

Road accidents are a social concern because they cause significant human suffering as well as financial expenses due to several reasons including injuries, deaths, etc.

According to the reports, though the traffic accidents in Maharashtra have been reduced, the number of fatalities caused daily has not been reduced, instead, it is increasing year by year. Therefore, the necessity to build Highways.

The total budget of the entire project is around 285.89 crore.

The stretches include the four-lane highway between Pune and Solapur, the four-lane highway between Pune and Aurangabad and the four to six-lane traffic between Pune and Nashik.

With this initiative, the fatalities are expected to decrease.

According to Kalaskar, ‘There will be a quick incident management system which will make sure an incident is reported quickly to the relevant authorities by recognizing the importance of transporting victims to trauma centres within the Golden hour.’

This will be done by ITMS in coordination with the State Motor Vehicle Department, the Highway Safety Police, emergency personnel and trauma care centers through an integrated command and control centre.
