Pune will see two new family courts begin operations on Monday in the forthcoming week, raising the total number to nine, in response to a significant rise in matrimonial disputes, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic. This decision, made by the Bombay High Court, aims to reduce the backlog of pending cases and improve the pace of dispute resolution.

The expansion comes as the jurisdiction of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has grown to accommodate the city’s increasing population, including areas added from newly merged villages. Pune’s family court is recognized as a model initiative in India, and with the new additions, the city will now have the highest number of family courts in the country.

Currently, more than 12,000 family law cases have been pending for over a decade in Pune. The number of judges has gradually increased from five to seven, and now to nine. With Mumbai having seven family courts, Pune surpasses it in terms of capacity to handle family law disputes.

On average, 15 to 20 new cases, including divorce, child custody, and parental access, are filed daily in Pune. Additionally, the city has three senior division courts handling family law matters.
