In response to a surge in serious accidents linked to negligence and drunk driving, the city’s police force has ramped up enforcement measures targeting reckless motorists. Deputy Commissioner of Police Rohidas Pawar announced that between January 1 and June 30, a total of 1,684 individuals have been apprehended for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The crackdown comes in the aftermath of several tragic incidents, including the recent death of a young computer engineer in Kalyaninagar, killed in a collision with a speeding car. This unfortunate event has spurred authorities to take decisive action, with a focus on deterring irresponsible behavior behind the wheel.

Pawar emphasized that offenders caught driving under the influence will face immediate consequences, including a three-month suspension of their driving licenses. Furthermore, a stringent provision in the law mandates permanent revocation of licenses for repeat offenders, highlighting the severity of the issue.

Aside from drunk driving, the police operation from May 21 to July 8 saw a staggering 158,269 cases of various traffic violations recorded citywide. These infractions ranged from speeding to driving without proper identification and other serious breaches of traffic laws. The total fines imposed during this period amounted to ₹12.21 crore, underscoring the scale of the enforcement efforts.

“The safety of our residents is our top priority,” stated Deputy Commissioner Pawar. “We are committed to ensuring that our roads are safe for all users by cracking down on reckless and irresponsible driving behaviors.”

The intensified enforcement campaign includes collaborative efforts with the Regional Transport Department to streamline processes and enforce penalties effectively. It also includes public awareness initiatives aimed at promoting responsible driving habits and fostering a culture of compliance with traffic regulations.

As the city continues to grapple with the aftermath of preventable accidents, law enforcement officials urge motorists to prioritize safety and adhere to traffic laws at all times. The goal is to significantly reduce the incidence of accidents caused by negligence and intoxication, thereby making the roads safer for everyone.
