The Pune traffic police have recommended to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) the cancellation of 200 driving licenses for individuals booked under the ‘drink and drive’ category of traffic offenses, following a high-profile Porsche accident in Kalyani Nagar. A new list of 800 additional offenders caught driving under the influence will also be forwarded to the RTO for further action. To curb this dangerous behavior, the police have established 27 checkpoints across the city, where they conduct on-the-spot legal actions against offenders, complete with eyewitness accounts, videography, and photography as required by law.

Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil stated that while the traffic police are taking strict actions, the authority to cancel driving licenses ultimately rests with the RTO. “We will continue our action against those driving under the influence of alcohol. Citizens must avoid driving while intoxicated, or they will face serious consequences,” Patil warned. Traffic police have intensified the use of breathalyzers at checkpoints and have started collecting fines directly from offenders.

DCP (Traffic) Amol Zende emphasized the strict stance being taken, saying, “We want to send a strong message that we will not tolerate anyone driving under the influence. A serious crackdown is underway to prevent this cognizable and criminal offense, and more steps are being implemented to ensure the safety of our citizens.”

According to Deputy RTO S. Bhonsale, the RTO responds to traffic branch recommendations by canceling licenses for a period of three to six months. “After a license is canceled, we counsel the driver on the dangers of driving under the influence and the benefits of safe driving. The license is returned only once the suspension period ends,” he explained. Bhonsale highlighted that this type of action is taken routinely to reinforce road safety and discourage reckless behavior.
