The cost of garlic, known for its premium pricing, has recently plummeted by half as the new garlic season kicks off. With an increased influx from Madhya Pradesh, garlic prices have experienced a significant decline.

Just a fortnight ago, consumers were grappling with garlic prices soaring to Rs 400 per kg. However, with the advent of the new season, prices have sharply decreased.

In the retail sector, the price of garlic now ranges from Rs 200 to 250 per kg, depending on the quality. Contrastingly, earlier, consumers had to bear the burden of exorbitant prices, with garlic costing as high as Rs 400 per kg. However, the situation has now eased, with prices dropping by up to Rs 100 per kilo. This drop in prices coincides with the entry of 20 to 30 tons of garlic into the market on a daily basis since the commencement of the new season.

As Maharashtra witnesses a decline in Gavran garlic cultivation, the demand for imported garlic has surged. Notably, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat are among the primary cultivators of garlic.

A spokesperson from a Pune market yard emphasized the onset of the new garlic season and the surge in garlic arrivals from Madhya Pradesh. Typically, following the cold weather, other states begin their garlic seasons, promising a substantial inflow of garlic over the next few months. Consequently, prices are anticipated to witness further declines.
