World Dosa Day: Swiggy delivered 29 million dosas in the last 12 months!

On World Dosa Day, celebrated on March 3, Swiggy revealed fascinating insights into India’s dosa craze, showcasing a delivery of 29 million dosas in the year leading up to February 2024. Bengaluru, known as the dosa capital, outpaced Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata combined, ordering twice as many dosas.

The report delves into the dosa varieties, highlighting the timeless appeal of Masala Dosa, along with Plain Dosa, Set Dosa, Onion Dosa, and Butter Masala Dosa, all ranking high among the most ordered. Surprisingly, unique variations like Chocolate Dosa, Pav Bhaji Dosa, and Schezwan Chop Suey Special Dosa found their place in the diverse dosa landscape.

Chandigarh emerged as a stronghold for Masala Dosa lovers, while dosa gained popularity in Ranchi, Coimbatore, Pune, and Bhopal. Notably, a Swiggy user from Coimbatore stood out as the dosa champion, placing a remarkable 447 orders in the past year.

The dosa’s popularity extended beyond culinary preferences, becoming the second most-ordered dish during significant events like Ramzan, the Cricket World Cup, and the IPL. During the Navratri season, dosa claimed the top spot as the most ordered vegetarian dish.

As a culinary icon believed to have originated in Udupi, Karnataka, dosa’s enduring popularity is showcased in its versatility, with variations like Chocolate Dosa and innovative combinations such as Palak Dosa and Schezwan Chop Suey Special Dosa.

With dosa cravings peaking during breakfast hours and dinner, Chennai emerged as the city with the strongest affinity for dosas during dinner. Hyderabad played a pivotal role in solidifying dosa’s status as a favourite snack-time dish.

In the dosa landscape, the classic Masala Dosa took centre stage as the crowd favourite across India, exemplifying the enduring love for this South Indian delicacy.
