The Railway authorities have removed the 20-kilometre limit for booking tickets using the Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) smartphone app.

On Thursday, officials announced that this step will benefit lakhs of passengers travelling through various sections of the railway network. Previously, passengers needed to be within a 20-kilometre radius of the railway station from where their journey would commence to buy a ticket through the UTS mobile app.

After a recent review of the UTS ticketing method, authorities decided to lift this limitation, allowing people to buy train tickets in advance, thereby saving time and reducing the risk of missing their trains. The Eastern Railway (ER) authorities released a statement saying, “To make travelling in the general class of trains easier, an important change has been made to the UTS on mobile app. As a result of this change, passengers can now get tickets to their destinations from anywhere, whereas earlier there was a limit of 20 km on this app. That is, if a passenger is within 20 km from a station, only then he could book the ticket on the UTS on Mobile app; this limitation has now been removed.”

However, the ER authorities also clarified that passengers will not be able to book online tickets using the UTS Mobile app if they are on the platform or travelling inside a train.

Indian Railways transports thousands of passengers in general coaches every day. The significant updates made to the UTS mobile app provide an easier method for purchasing tickets. Railways has revoked the outside limit geo-fencing distance restriction for the UTS app, effective immediately. This means passengers can now purchase platform and general tickets from the comfort of their homes.

The UTS (Unreserved Ticketing System) smartphone app allows travellers to purchase unreserved tickets without any distance restriction. This new feature enables travellers to buy general tickets from anywhere, significantly simplifying the process. Previously, passengers could only book general tickets through the UTS mobile app if they were within 20 kilometres of the station platform. Now, with the distance restriction lifted, general tickets can be purchased online from any location.

Using the UTS mobile app, travellers can generate paperless general tickets, platform tickets, and season tickets on their mobile devices. This change not only saves travellers time but also streamlines the ticketing process, conserving paper and protecting the environment.
