Rajiv Gandhi National Zoo set to reopen for visitors from March 20

After two years of being closed due to the Covid19 pandemic, the Pune based Rajiv Gandhi National Zoological Park and Research Centre in Katraj is set to reopen from March 20.

The Covid-19 pandemic forced many public amenities to remain close. Rajiv Gandhi Zoo remained shut for a very long period. With the restrictions being relaxed, Puneites and animal lovers were eagerly waiting for the zoo to open.

On March 14, 2022, the Pune Municipal Corporation Commissioner Vikram Kumar issued a notification mentioning to follow Covid Appropriate Behavior  (CAB) and only fully vaccinated people shall be given entry to visit the zoo.

The ticket prices will be ranging similar to what it was earlier for adults 40 Rs and for children Rs 10. As well as the visitors will be able to access to newly developed user-friendly website to book the tickets.

Speaking to Pune Pulse Rajkumar Jadhav director Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park and Wildlife Research centre said, “We are glad and excited that the zoo will be reopened. The new species of animal set in zoo will be attractive to see like Jungle cat, leopard cat and Indian giant squirrel too.”

He added, “We have been asked to follow the pandemic guidelines and maintaining social distance and other appropriate measures of pandemic. We are geared up to welcome our visitors with our staff who are being trained.”

As per the PMC Vikram Kumar’s notification, “The zoo will reopen on Sunday March 20, 2022. The visitors having two doses shall be allowed to visit the zoo. Violation of norms may result into taking action under section of 188 of the Indian Penal Code. “

Another officer on the condition of anonymity said, “The guidelines are unclear as the children are our major target group who visit the zoo and they are unvaccinated.”
