Reliance Retail, under Mukesh Ambani, is gearing up to launch a new sports retail chain to challenge Decathlon. The company plans to lease 8,000 to 10,000 sq ft spaces in urban areas for this venture.

Decathlon, which entered India in 2009, reported a revenue of Rs. 3,955 crores in the last fiscal year and remains a key player in the market. Other brands like Puma and Skechers have also seen significant profits.

Decathlon considers India one of its top five global markets and aims to open 10 new stores annually while enhancing its online presence.

Reliance Retail also plans to introduce the Chinese fast-fashion brand Shein in India, showcasing its diverse and ambitious expansion strategy. The entry of Reliance Retail into the sports market could significantly heighten competition, influencing market share dynamics and consumer choices.

While this move challenges Decathlon, it also creates opportunities for both companies to innovate and grow in India’s dynamic retail market.
