The Vishrambaug police in Pune recently registered a case against a 32-year-old man from Ambegaon for allegedly defrauding a retired private company employee of Rs 70 lakh under the pretext of securing admission for his son in a private medical college.

According to police reports, the victim, a 60-year-old resident of Kasba Peth, entered into contact with the suspect in 2022. The suspect, claiming to have influential connections, assured the victim of facilitating his son’s admission.

To bolster his credibility, the suspect handed over a blank cheque to the victim. Subsequently, he began soliciting money from the victim for various purposes related to the admission process, including form filling, invoice tickets, registration fees, college charges, admission deposits, insurance stamp fees, and scholarship procedures.

Over the course of two years, the victim transferred Rs 59 lakh online and provided an additional Rs 11 lakh in cash to the suspect. Despite repeated assurances from the suspect, no progress was made in securing the admission, causing the victim’s son to lose a year.

It was only after realizing the deception that the victim approached the police and filed a complaint against the fraudster.
