Retired Officer Dies by Suicide in Baner After Alleged Cheating by Builder; FIR Registered
Pune, February 24, 2026: A retired government officer allegedly died by suicide in Baner after facing prolonged distress over an alleged property dispute with a builder.
The deceased has been identified as Naresh Umakant Mahajan, who had retired from the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDCL). According to police, Mahajan had handed over his land to builder Jayantilal Oswal for development under an agreement that assured him residential flats in return.
However, as per the complaint, the builder allegedly delayed fulfilling the terms of the agreement for a long period. In a suicide note recovered by the police, Mahajan reportedly stated that he was taking the extreme step due to mental harassment and frustration caused by the delay in receiving the promised flats.
Mahajan allegedly jumped from the seventh floor of a partially constructed building on the same plot that had been given for development to the builder.
Baner Police have registered a case against builder Jayantilal Oswal and Rishabh Oswal on charges of cheating and abetment to suicide.
The family of the deceased has demanded immediate arrest of Jayantilal Oswal and strict action in the case. Further investigation is underway.
