Adelaide: Rohit Sharma, India’s captain, has confirmed that he will take on a middle-order batting role while KL Rahul will open the innings in the second Test against Australia at the Adelaide Oval, starting Friday.

Rohit, who missed the first Test in Perth to be with his family following the birth of his second child, rejoined the team ahead of the day-night match. Despite speculation that Rahul might be pushed down the order after his determined knock of 77 runs in Perth, Rohit dismissed the rumors during a pre-match press conference.

“KL will open the innings, and I will play somewhere in the middle. Not easy for me, but it’s the best for the team,” Rohit stated.

India enters the second match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on the back of a commanding 295-run victory in Perth. The visitors made an extraordinary recovery after being bowled out for 150 in their first innings, marking a strong comeback from their home series whitewash against New Zealand.

The day-night Test in Adelaide will pose a significant challenge for India’s batting lineup, with the pink ball expected to swing under lights. Addressing the decision to keep Rahul at the top, Rohit explained, “We want results, we want success. Those two guys at the top batted brilliantly in the first match. There’s no need to change that now, but things might be different in the future.”

Rohit admitted that moving down the order is a difficult adjustment for him but said, “From the team’s perspective, it made a lot of sense.”

India’s captain also faces personal pressure, having scored just one half-century in his last ten Test innings. With challenging evening conditions in Adelaide, the team will need a strong performance to maintain momentum in the series.

The second Test begins on December 6, with both teams eyeing crucial points in the World Test Championship standings.
