She Became A Cop, He Became ‘Unfit’: Priest Faces Divorce After Supporting Wife’s Police Dream
After funding his wife’s journey to become a sub-inspector, a Bhopal priest now faces divorce as she says his appearance and profession embarrass her in public.
A deeply unsettling case from Bhopal has sparked widespread discussion on social media and beyond, after a woman who recently became a police sub-inspector filed for divorce from her husband, citing embarrassment over his traditional appearance and profession as a priest. What has shocked many is that the same man had financially and emotionally supported her ambition to join the police force, even using his modest earnings from religious work to fund her education and coaching.
According to court records and counsellors associated with the case, the couple lived together for three to four years after marriage. During this time, the woman was preparing for competitive exams to enter the police service. Her husband, a temple priest, encouraged her dream and invested a large part of his income from performing rituals and religious ceremonies into her training, study materials, and exam preparations.
Her efforts eventually paid off when she was selected as a sub-inspector and completed her training successfully. However, shortly after joining the service, her behaviour towards her husband reportedly changed. She began objecting to his traditional attire, which includes wearing a dhoti-kurta and keeping a shikha, or topknot, that is customary for priests.
The woman allegedly asked him to cut his hair, change his clothes, and abandon his priestly appearance so that he would better match her new professional identity. When he refused, stating that his faith, attire, and profession were integral parts of who he is, she approached the family court seeking divorce.
In her petition, the woman stated that she feels socially uncomfortable and embarrassed being seen in public with her husband. She claimed that his traditional lifestyle and appearance no longer align with her social and professional standing as a police officer. According to her, this mismatch has created a gap that makes it difficult for her to continue the marriage.
The husband, on the other hand, told counsellors that he never objected to her growth or career ambitions and stood by her during her most challenging years. He expressed hurt that after achieving success, the very identity that once supported her journey is now being treated as a liability. He has reportedly refused to change his appearance, saying it would mean giving up his beliefs and self-respect.
Several counselling sessions have been conducted by the family court in an attempt to reconcile the couple. However, counsellors involved in the process said the woman has remained firm in her decision and is unwilling to continue the relationship unless her husband changes his lifestyle and appearance.
A family court lawyer explained that such disputes are becoming increasingly common.
“After a petition is filed, counselling is conducted to try and reconcile the couple. In many cases, families agree to resolve the matter, but if reconciliation fails, the district judge decides the divorce plea after due consideration,” he said.
Family counsellors observing the case noted that conflicts often arise when one partner experiences sudden social or professional mobility. A change in status can sometimes create emotional distance, unrealistic expectations, or a sense of discomfort with past identities that were once accepted.
The court has not yet taken a final decision on the divorce petition. For now, the case stands as a stark reminder of how success and social change can sometimes strain relationships, especially when respect for each other’s roots and identities begins to fade.
