Anand Sagar Chopra belonged to the second generation of the Sagar family that managed the banner Sagar Arts. He played a significant role in carrying forward the creative legacy established by his father, Ramanand Sagar, who created and directed the iconic television series Ramayan (1987–1988). Anand Sagar served as one of the co-producers of the groundbreaking mythological show, which became a cultural phenomenon across India.
The original Ramayan featured memorable performances by Arun Govil as Lord Ram, Dipika Chikhlia as Sita, Sunil Lahri as Lakshman, Arvind Trivedi as Raavan, and Dara Singh as Hanuman. The series was based on the ancient epic composed by sage Valmiki and also drew inspiration from Tulsidas’ Ramcharitmanas. It went on to redefine Indian television viewership in the late 1980s.
Continuing his father’s legacy, Anand Sagar was also closely associated with later mythological ventures, including the 2008 adaptation of Ramayan. His work helped sustain the family’s strong presence in devotional and mythological storytelling on Indian television.
Beyond television, the Sagar Arts banner also produced several Hindi films over the decades. These included titles such as Geet (1970), Lalkaar (1972), Jalte Badan (1973), Charas (1976), Prem Bandhan (1979), Armaan (1981), Baghavat (1982), Romance (1983), Salma (1985), 1971 (2007), Rabba Main Kya Karoon (2013), and Mitwaa (2015). Anand Sagar was also associated with projects like Ankhen, Armaan, and Alif Laila, contributing both as a director and producer.
