In response to a series of thefts plaguing the Mumbai-Pune railway route, authorities have initiated decisive measures to curb the nefarious activities of a gang preying on unsuspecting passengers. Thefts, primarily conducted through open train windows during technical halts in the Khandala Ghat section, have prompted swift action from the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Police Force (RPF).

Over the past couple of months, a total of six First Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed by the GRP, shedding light on the recurring incidents of robbery. Senior Police Inspector Rajendra Gaikwad, spearheading operations at the Pune railway station, revealed that the modus operandi involves seizing valuables such as gold jewellery and mobile phones from passengers who leave their windows open during the night.

To counter these criminal activities, a joint team comprising eight GRP personnel and six RPF personnel has been strategically stationed at various points along the ghat section. This proactive measure aims to deter further incidents of theft and ensure the safety of passengers traversing the route.

Passengers, informed of the risks associated with night halts in the ghat section, have expressed gratitude for the concerted efforts of law enforcement agencies. Kiran Pisal, a frequent traveller in the Sai Shirdi Express, lauded the initiative taken by the GRP, emphasising the importance of safeguarding passengers against potential harm.

In addition to deploying personnel for round-the-clock patrolling, the GRP has undertaken awareness campaigns urging passengers to refrain from opening windows during night journeys. Gaikwad highlighted the positive impact of these measures, noting a reduction in reported robberies since the police have heightened vigilance.
