State Government Launches Unique Book Reading Initiative For Students from January 1-15
In an effort to rekindle students’ interest in reading, the Maharashtra state government has announced the launch of a new initiative from January 1 to 15. The program aims to engage college and university students in activities like group reading, reading skill workshops, book reviews, and storytelling competitions.
The Higher and Technical Education Department has issued detailed guidelines for this initiative. Students are encouraged to read books beyond their academic curriculum and write a review of at least 500 words or give a five-minute presentation on their chosen book. Colleges are expected to provide a curated list of recommended books and make them accessible to students. Outstanding reviews will be included in the college’s annual publication, and winners will be awarded on January 26.
The initiative involves over 6,000 colleges, 83 universities, and 12,500 libraries across the state, ensuring participation from both urban and rural areas. A state-level committee and supporting committees at district and college levels have been set up to oversee the program. Libraries are also encouraged to host book exhibitions and enroll more students as members during the event.
The top three students from each of the state’s ten divisions will receive expert guidance as part of the program. According to the Higher Education, this initiative stands apart from the existing Reading Inspiration Day held annually on October 15, focusing solely on students’ engagement and marking a significant milestone in promoting a reading culture among the youth.
