As Maharashtra and several parts of India continue to experience soaring temperatures, health experts are urging people to take extra precautions during the final week of May, known as ‘Navtapa’  traditionally considered the hottest nine days of the summer season.

Navtapa refers to the nine-day period when the Sun enters the Rohini Nakshatra, a phase associated with intense heat and rising temperatures. According to traditional beliefs and weather patterns, this period witnesses the strongest solar radiation of the year, often leading to heatwave-like conditions, hot winds and sudden spikes in temperature.

This year, Navtapa will begin on May 25 and continue until June 2.

During this period, temperatures in several parts of northern and central India can cross 45 degrees Celsius. The scorching afternoon heat and dry winds can severely affect health, making it difficult for people to remain outdoors for long durations.

Health experts warn that the biggest risk during Navtapa is heatstroke and dehydration. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and hot winds can increase body temperature rapidly, especially if adequate water intake is not maintained.

Children, senior citizens and people with existing medical conditions are considered most vulnerable during this period. Common symptoms linked to heat-related illnesses include headache, dizziness, weakness, vomiting, excessive thirst and fainting.

Meteorologists say that the last days of May and the beginning of June generally witness peak summer conditions as the Sun’s rays fall more directly on the Earth’s surface, causing rapid heating of land areas. Although occasional rainfall or western disturbances may bring temporary relief in some regions, Navtapa is still regarded as one of the most intense phases of summer.

Summer Care Tips During Navtapa

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day and carry a water bottle while stepping outdoors.
  • Avoid going out between 12 noon and 4 pm unless absolutely necessary.
  • Cover your head with a cap, scarf or cloth while travelling in the sun.
  • Wear loose, light-coloured cotton clothes to stay cool.
  • Keep ORS, glucose, lemon water, buttermilk and coconut water at home to maintain hydration.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.

Doctors advise seeking immediate medical attention if a person experiences severe headache, dizziness, vomiting, high fever, breathing difficulty or signs of dehydration, as these could indicate heatstroke symptoms.
