Delhi-based architectural firm Morphogenesis is on the verge of realizing its claim to fame with the inauguration of the Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB), touted as the “world’s biggest workspace.”

Surpassing the capacity of the US Pentagon, the SDB boasts a staggering 4,200 diamond trading offices, signaling a shift of the entire diamond trading business from Mumbai to Surat.

The sprawling complex, built on 35.54 acres at a staggering cost of Rs 3400 crore, is poised to redefine the global landscape of rough and polished diamond trading.

The transformation of a once foul-smelling landfill site in Khajod, located on Surat’s outskirts, into a thriving garden is a testament to the city’s commitment to welcoming the global gems and jewelry community.

With the waste treatment plant relocation underway, the city is also gearing up for the implementation of a Metro rail system and the extension of city bus connectivity to Khajod. This concerted effort serves as a prelude to the grand inauguration ceremony led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which will also mark the unveiling of the international airport on Sunday.

Despite the grandeur surrounding the SDB launch, diamond businessmen have voiced a series of demands. Among them is the need for more international flights departing from Surat airport, which currently only offers a single flight route to Sharjah. Additionally, there is a call for the relaxation of prohibition laws in the city.

Post-Diwali this year, the SDB has seen the opening of 135 offices, with 26 operated by Mumbai-based businessmen who have either shifted or expanded their operations to Surat. As the city prepares to host the world’s largest workspace, discussions and negotiations are ongoing to address the concerns and expectations of the gems and jewelry industry, which eagerly anticipates the inauguration of the Surat Diamond Bourse.
