Maharashtra Weather Alert For May 12: IMD Issues Yellow Alert For 6 Districts
Mumbai, April 27, 2026: Maharashtra witnessed intense heatwave conditions on Sunday, with several cities recording temperatures significantly above normal. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Akola emerged as the hottest city in the country, registering a scorching 46.9°C.
Other cities in the Vidarbha region also recorded extreme temperatures, with Amravati at 46.8°C, Wardha at 46.4°C, Yavatmal at 46°C, and Nagpur at 45.4°C. Notably, six out of the 16 hottest cities in India were from the Vidarbha region alone.
The heatwave extended beyond Vidarbha, impacting other parts of the state. Cities like Pune, Solapur, and Nashik recorded temperatures above 40°C, intensifying discomfort for residents.
In western Maharashtra, Solapur registered a high of 43°C and a low of 26.7°C. Satara and Sangli recorded maximum temperatures of 41.4°C each, while Kolhapur saw relatively lower temperatures at 37.6°C (maximum) and 25.3°C (minimum).
Among other regions, Pune recorded 41.8°C, while temperatures reached 41.5°C in Nashik, 41.9°C in Beed, and 41.2°C in Ahilyanagar.
Even traditionally cooler hill stations offered little respite. Mahabaleshwar recorded a maximum temperature of 33.7°C, with a notable rise in minimum temperature to 23.4°C. Similarly, Matheran saw temperatures climb to 37.2°C, indicating the widespread impact of the heatwave.
Meanwhile, authorities confirmed the release of water from the Ujani Dam into the Bhima River at a discharge rate of 6,000 cusecs for irrigation purposes, following a decision by the canal advisory committee.
Officials stated that water release this summer will be limited to a single cycle instead of the usual two. They also clarified that there is no immediate need for water discharge for drinking purposes, as Solapur city now receives water through a dedicated pipeline system directly from the dam.
With temperatures continuing to rise across Maharashtra, authorities have urged citizens to take precautions and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.
