Delayed roadwork and lack of coordination paralyze highway, leaving commuters in despair.
An unprecedented 15-kilometer traffic jam on the Pune-Satara Highway left thousands of commuters stranded, many of whom were on their way to cast votes in their native villages. The gridlock, attributed to delayed highway widening work and poorly managed diversions, caused massive frustration among voters and travelers alike.
Traffic Bottlenecks and Frustrated Commuters Â
The congestion extended from Navale Bridge in Pune to Varve in Bhor taluka, affecting key choke points like Dari Pul, Gogalwadi Phata, Kondhanpur Phata and Khed Shivapur Toll Plaza. The situation worsened at construction sites for the Khed Shivapur and Shivare flyovers, where diversions funneled traffic into narrower lanes.
Commuters faced hours of delays, many expressing fears of missing their chance to vote. Stranded passengers expressed outrage, accusing the administration of negligence and the construction firm, Nikhil Construction, of unacceptable delays in completing the flyover work.
Administrative Apathy and Police Shortage Â
The crisis unfolded with no visible efforts from the traffic police to manage the situation, as most officers were reportedly assigned to election duties. Motorists reported a complete lack of on-ground coordination, exacerbating bottlenecks and adding to the chaos.
Despite the mounting frustration, no immediate action was taken by authorities to ease the congestion. Some citizens appealed for urgent intervention to prevent a repeat of such mismanagement during critical events like elections.
Toll Waiver to Ease Flow Towards Pune Â
As a measure to alleviate some of the congestion, vehicles traveling towards Pune on the National Highway No. 4 at Shivapur Toll Plaza were exempted from toll fees. Authorities implemented this step to reduce delays for commuters heading to polling stations.
Construction Delays and Long-Term Concerns Â
The ongoing roadwork on the Pune-Satara highway has been a consistent source of trouble for commuters. Officials have been criticized for the slow progress of infrastructure projects, with the flyover work at Shivare cited as a key contributor to the traffic snarls.
Immediate measures and expedited construction are being demanded by citizens to ensure smoother traffic flow and better management during high-stakes events like elections.
