Sivaganga district witnessed a devastating road accident on Sunday evening when two government-run buses collided head-on, leaving 11 people dead and more than 60 injured. The crash took place around 5 pm near Vivekananda Polytechnic College on the Tirupattur-Karaikudi highway, a major route connecting districts in southern Tamil Nadu.

One of the buses was travelling from Kangeyam in Tiruppur to Karaikudi, while the other was operating on the Karaikudi–Dindigul route. The collision was so severe that passengers were thrown from their seats, and several became trapped within the mangled metal frames of the buses.

Emergency responders, including police and fire-and-rescue teams, arrived promptly at the scene. Rescue operations were intense, with local residents joining efforts to extract passengers from the wreckage. “Eight people died on the spot,” a police officer confirmed, while three others later succumbed to their injuries at Tirupattur Government Hospital.

The injured were taken to multiple medical facilities, including Karaikudi Government Hospital, Tirupattur GH, and Sivaganga Government Medical College Hospital. Officials reported that 64 individuals received treatment — 33 were admitted as in-patients, while 31 were treated and discharged after first aid. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased.

Investigators are focusing on potential driver error or fatigue as the cause. The crash occurred on a straight, two-way highway in good condition, prompting questions about what led to the tragedy. Preliminary findings indicate that either the Dindigul-bound bus veered into the opposite lane, or the Tiruppur-bound driver may have been drowsy. Authorities are reviewing onboard vehicle records and interviewing survivors and staff to piece together the events leading up to the collision.

Among the 11 deceased were eight women, two men, and a child, while at least 19 others sustained injuries in the crash near Kummangudi, about five kilometers from Pillaiyarpatti.

National and state leaders expressed deep sorrow over the incident. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin stated, “Upon learning the heartbreaking news that 11 people lost their lives in an accident near Thirupathur in Sivaganga District, I was deeply shocked and pained.” President Droupadi Murmu shared her condolences, saying, “The news of the loss of lives in tragic accident in Sivaganga, Tamil Nadu, is very sad. I extend my deep condolences to bereaved families and pray for the swift recovery of those injured.” Vice President CP Radhakrishnan added, “Deeply saddened by the loss of lives in the tragic road accident in Sivaganga district, Tamil Nadu. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, and prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences through a tweet and stated that an ex-gratia amount of Rs 2 lakh would be provided to the families of those who died.
