The Yerawada Central Prison in Pune is home to a 27-year-old undertrial inmate who was murdered on Thursday afternoon. According to reports, four other undertrial inmates attacked him with a pair of scissors and a piece of metal hinge.

The four prisoners have been charged with murder and other offenses under the Prisons Act by the police.

Jail officials claimed that the four attackers and the deceased were members of rival gangs that had previously operated in the Pimpri Chinchwad area, citing past rivalry as the basis for the attack.

The strict Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) has resulted in the imprisonment of several members of both gangs at Yerawada Central Prison.

The deceased, identified as Chikhli resident Mahesh Mahadev Chandanshive, was detained in November of last year by the Pimpri Chinchwad police along with his gang members on suspicion of planning and organizing an armed assault, possessing dangerous weapons, and preparing and organizing a dacoity.

He was placed under magistrate custody on November 30 of last year and sent to Yerawada Central Prison. He was housed in the prison’s Barrack No. 1 of Circle No. 2, which is designated for undertrials.

A senior Yerawada Central Prison officer stated that at approximately 3:10 pm on Thursday, a group of four undertrial inmatesā€”Aniket Samdur, Mahesh Mane, Aditya Mure, and Ganesh Moteā€”attacked Chandanshive. The assailants used a fragment of a door’s metal hinge and a pair of scissors meant for shaving in prison. Chandanshive was hurt in the abdomen and on the neck. After receiving emergency care from prison medical staff, he was transported in a prison ambulance to Sassoon General Hospital for additional care. At the hospital, the doctor declared him dead.

The officer further continued that four attackers have been charged with murder and other offenses under the Prisons Act. An investigation will be carried out to find out how they obtained the items they used as murder weapons. The court will be asked to grant police custody of the four individuals so that the assault case can be investigated.
