A 23-year-old law student, Rakshit Ravish Chaurasia, has denied being drunk when his speeding car killed a woman and injured eight others in Vadodara.

The accident happened around 12:30 a.m. near Muktanand Cross Roads in the Karelibaug area.

Chaurasia, a fourth-year student at M.S. University, claimed the crash occurred when his car’s airbags suddenly deployed after hitting a pothole and another vehicle, blocking his vision. “We were turning right, and the car slightly touched another vehicle.

The airbags opened suddenly, and I couldn’t see anything,” he said. He denied partying or drinking and stated he had attended Holika Dahan earlier that evening.

After the crash, Chaurasia reportedly shouted “another round,” “uncle,” and “Om Namah Shivay” while trying to flee the scene. Locals chased him down and thrashed him before police arrived. CCTV footage captured the entire incident.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Panna Momaya, Chaurasia first hit a woman on a two-wheeler near Amrapali Complex and then knocked down two more bikers. One woman died, and eight people, including a child, were injured and hospitalized.

Chaurasia has been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. His friend, Chauhan, who was with him, walked away from the scene, claiming Chaurasia was driving. Police have taken Chauhan’s blood samples and may charge him under the Prohibition Act if he was intoxicated.

Chaurasia, originally from Uttar Pradesh, lives in Nizampura, Vadodara. He expressed his wish to meet the victim’s family. “It is my fault. Whatever they want should happen,” he said.

Police suspect Chaurasia’s behavior showed reckless intent to cause more harm.
