The Vande Bharat sleeper train, scheduled to be launched by Indian Railways in 2024, is expected to revolutionize long-distance overnight train travel on major rail routes in India.

Indian Railways has emphasized that the Vande Bharat sleeper train will be an exceptional and world-class train set, designed to create a remarkable experience for passengers.

This train, considered superior to the Rajdhani Express trains, is a flagship project of Indian Railways aimed at transforming premium passenger travel. Let’s explore some essential details about the Vande Bharat sleeper train project.

Commencing in late October, the production of the first Vande Bharat sleeper prototype train set is underway at BEML Limited’s Bangalore complex. This train is being manufactured in collaboration with Indian Railways’ coach factory ICF.

The Vande Bharat sleeper train, similar to the AC chair car version, will possess the ability to operate at speeds of 160 kmph, thereby classifying it as a semi-high speed train. This self-propelled train will exhibit enhanced acceleration and deceleration, resulting in a substantial reduction in travel time.

The Vande Bharat sleeper train’s interior is expected to have a remarkable design, according to ICF BG Mallya. This design will introduce a unique and impressive element that has not been witnessed in India before. Additionally, BEML CMD Shantanu Roy has emphasized that the train will surpass the standards set by Rajdhani trains and draw inspiration from highly advanced trains operating in other countries.

The sleeper train of Vande Bharat boasts of top-notch interiors and modern amenities for passengers. It is equipped with a modular pantry, odor-free toilet system, sensor-based intercommunication doors, automatic exterior passenger doors, and a shower with hot water in the 1st AC car. Additionally, the train features noise insulation and mitigation measures to ensure a peaceful journey for travelers.

The Vande Bharat sleeper train offers various amenities such as dedicated berths and toilets for individuals with disabilities, a spacious luggage area, remotely operated Fire barrier doors at the end wall, soft lighting, smoke and fire detection systems, on-board Wi-Fi infotainment, an emergency talk back unit, and a centralized coach monitoring system. In terms of its exterior, the sleeper train resembles the Vande Bharat Express with its aerodynamic design and a nose cone similar to that of bullet trains. Additionally, the train is equipped with a driving cabin at both ends.

Officials claim that the Vande Bharat sleeper trains will provide a smooth ride without any jerks, thanks to their semi-permanent couplers and superior bogie design. Additionally, these trains will be equipped with crash-worthy features and the KAVACH anti-train collision system, which has been developed in-house. Indian Railways has commissioned BEML to manufacture 10 of these trains, while ICF will supply the propulsion systems.
