‘Village Of Teachers’ In UP: 400+ Educators In 700 Homes, A 150-Year Legacy Of Learning
Bulandshahr’s Sankhani sets a rare example where education defines identity and future
In a country known for its diversity, a small village in Uttar Pradesh has built a unique identity through education. Sankhani village in Bulandshahr district is famously called the “Village of Teachers,” where teaching is not just a profession but a tradition passed through generations.
Out of around 700 households in the village, more than 400 people are government teachers, while over 100 serve as headmasters. In many homes, at least two members are part of the education sector, making the village a remarkable hub of educators.
A Legacy That Began In 1876
The foundation of Sankhani’s educational journey dates back nearly 150 years. The village saw its first madrasa established in 1876, marking the beginning of a strong learning culture.
In 1880, Tufail Ahmed became the village’s first teacher—an event that laid the groundwork for what Sankhani has become today. Over time, this early push towards education turned into a deeply rooted tradition embraced by generations.
How Every Home Became A Classroom
Gradually, education became a way of life in Sankhani. Children grow up in an environment where teaching is respected and encouraged, often inspiring them to follow the same path.
Today, almost every family has at least one teacher, with several households having two or even three members working in the education sector. This consistent exposure has created a cycle where education continues to thrive naturally.
Women Leading The Change
One of the most inspiring aspects of Sankhani is the active participation of women in education. More than 100 women from the village are working as teachers, while many others are pursuing higher studies.
Their success has not only strengthened the village’s educational base but also encouraged young girls to aim higher. Achievements like topping state-level exams have further reinforced this positive shift.
Free Coaching And Community Effort
Sankhani’s success is also driven by collective efforts. The village offers free coaching for competitive exams, supported by local teachers and those who have moved outside but remain connected to their roots.
This culture of giving back ensures that every child gets the opportunity to succeed, regardless of financial background.
An Inspiration For The Country
The story of Sankhani is not just about numbers but about mindset. It shows how a consistent focus on education over generations can transform an entire community.
From a single madrasa in the 19th century to becoming a “factory of teachers,” the village stands today as a powerful example of how education can shape identity, opportunity, and progress.
