Pune: The absence of a grade separator from Kalewadi to Kaspate Wasti has led to traffic congestion in the city as a result of which several societies in Wakad are in distress.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Dr Ritu Awasthi, Resident of Rhythm Society, Wakad said, “The Kalewadi Phata area is a sheer menace with commuters travelling from any direction they like. Lack of traffic rules, no traffic wardens and many more issues are there. The BRTS bus system also seems to be different as, even when the traffic signal becomes Red, the buses keep travelling. Once a bus damaged my own vehicle. Forget vehicle driving, people cannot walk or cross the road as well. A proper grade separator is a must here.”

Sheetal Rao, another resident of Rhythm Society, Wakad said, ” A distance which can be covered in 2 minutes takes 15 minutes to commute. The traffic congestion has become an everyday issue here. People keep driving in any way they like. Wrong side driving is also there. Hence, proper traffic monitoring & a grade separator is required to fend off the traffic problems.”

As per information by Abhijit Garad, a secretary of Rhythm Society, Wakad, the request for the construction of a grade separator was submitted to the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) 4 years back. The PCMC had approved it for which tenders have been floated as well. Still, there are no steps taken towards this.

Garad further said, “The grade separator application was sent to the PCMC 4 years ago. A tender was also floated for it. But nothing has happened to date. If the PCMC doesn’t want to take this seriously, then why was the construction of the grade separator assured & why a tender was floated?”

Pramod Ombase, Civic Executive Engineer, PCMC said, “The grade separator was agreed upon but, due to land acquisition problems, the construction work of the grade separator is getting delayed & postponed.”
