Panic gripped Mumbai’s Madanpura area on Wednesday afternoon when a section of an old residential building suddenly collapsed, injuring seven people. The incident took place around 12:48 p.m. at the single-storey Fanuswala Building on Sakhali Street in Byculla West, according to civic and fire brigade officials.

The collapse involved a portion of the first floor, which came crashing down without warning. Following distress calls, the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) declared a Level-I emergency alert and swiftly dispatched four fire engines to the site. Teams from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), local police, and ward staff joined the operation to rescue trapped residents and remove debris.

The injured have been identified as Gulam Rasool (24), Mohammad Sayyad (59), Arif (29), Sattar (35), Mohammad (35), Samsul (29), and Cathrine (45). All seven victims were immediately shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.

According to officials, Gulam Rasool and Mohammad Sayyad were admitted to Nair Hospital and are reported to be in stable condition. The other five — Arif, Sattar, Mohammad, Samsul, and Cathrine — were treated on an outpatient basis at Bhatia Hospital and later discharged.

Rescue teams worked through the afternoon to clear the debris and secure the damaged site. The fire brigade confirmed that the area has been cordoned off to prevent further risk. Meanwhile, civic authorities have launched an investigation to determine what led to the collapse, though the exact age of the building remains unclear.

The incident has reignited concerns over Mumbai’s aging residential structures, many of which have weakened over time due to poor maintenance. Quick intervention by emergency teams prevented a larger tragedy, ensuring that all victims received timely medical care.

Authorities have appealed to residents living in old or dilapidated buildings to remain alert and report any visible cracks or structural issues to the BMC immediately — a step that could help prevent future mishaps like this one.
