Strict action against illegal vehicle modifications came into focus in Bengaluru after a Kerala student was penalised for driving a car that emitted flames from its exhaust. The modification, considered highly dangerous and unlawful, led to the student being fined ₹1.11 lakh by the Yelahanka Regional Transport Office (RTO).

The matter surfaced when the student drove the modified car to attend a party. Videos showing fire shooting out of the exhaust quickly circulated on social media, drawing the attention of Bengaluru Traffic Police and transport authorities.

Based on the viral clips, officials tracked the vehicle to Bharatiya City in northeast Bengaluru. During inspection, multiple violations were found. Apart from producing excessive noise, the car was seen spitting flames from its exhaust, posing a serious risk to other road users and pedestrians.

Bengaluru Traffic Police addressed the incident through a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Public roads are not the place to perform stunts. Modifying a vehicle’s exhaust to emit sparks or fire is illegal. Such acts come at a cost.”

A video shared by the department showed flames bursting from the exhaust, followed by an official letter issued by the Yelahanka RTO to the police. The footage also included a payment receipt confirming a fine of ₹1,11,500 and ended with a police officer standing beside the modified car.

Officials clarified that such offences fall under serious violations of motor vehicle rules and attract heavy penalties that only the RTO is authorised to impose. Speaking to The Times of India, a police officer said the car had undergone major illegal modifications and the fire-emitting exhaust created a significant safety hazard.

Reports further revealed that the student had bought the car for ₹70,000 and later modified several components, including the exhaust system, to achieve the fire-spitting effect.

The incident sparked varied reactions on social media. Many users welcomed the action taken by the authorities. One comment read, “Great work Bengaluru Traffic Police.” Another user wrote, “Glad that you stayed firm and imposed the maximum penalty. It’s time to be very strict against violations.”

Several others also praised the move, with remarks such as, “Hats off to BLR and KA police,” and “Commendable action! Practically everything visible on this car is illegal.” At the same time, a few questioned the size of the penalty, asking whether the fine was too steep.

Despite the mixed responses, officials maintained that enforcing strict penalties is necessary to discourage dangerous modifications and stunts on public roads.
