Residents of Central Maharashtra are being advised to prepare for a heatwave as temperatures are expected to rise significantly between April 15 and 20. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for the region, anticipating temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius, particularly in districts like Pune.

While Central Maharashtra braces for the heat, the Vidarbha region has been experiencing unexpected rainfall in isolated areas. However, relief is on the horizon as clear weather is expected to prevail around April 19, coinciding with the first phase of elections.

The weather across Maharashtra has been varied, with some areas witnessing a drop in temperature alongside sporadic rains, thunder, and lightning. Conversely, other parts have been enduring relentless heat and above-average temperatures.

The forecast attributes the temperature surge in Central Maharashtra to increased moisture from both the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. KS Hosalikar, head of Climate Research and Services at IMD Pune, cautioned residents to heed the department’s heat advisories, especially in regions like Pune where temperatures could surpass 40 degrees Celsius.

Explaining the atmospheric conditions influencing Maharashtra’s weather, Senior Meteorologist Vaishali Khobragade highlighted the presence of a cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan and Gujarat, along with a trough extending to Odisha. Additionally, a cyclonic circulation near Comorin and a trough towards Konkan and Goa contribute to moisture influx from the Arabian Sea. These factors are expected to elevate temperatures in Central Maharashtra.

Despite concerns that unseasonal rains might disrupt voting during the upcoming elections, the latest forecast brings relief. Vidarbha and Marathwada are anticipated to witness clear skies from April 17 onwards, minimizing the likelihood of rainfall on election day, particularly in areas like Nagpur, where polling is scheduled for April 19.
